MUTATE TO BELONG
Deadline for all applications: March 15
Only electronically submitted applications will be accepted.
This is an open call for two Edmonton visual artists to participate in an exchange residency and public outdoor exhibition in August 2019. The artists selected through this open call will each collaborate with an Estonian artist. Through virtual communication the artists will get to know one another’s practices, share ideas, and collaborate in the making of a temporary public exhibition. There will be a two week residency period where all the artists will work together in a studio located at Edmonton’s new arts and cultural centre Coral Plaza.
Parking Lot Platform is a transient public gallery space curated and designed by Temporary Investments. The project transforms parking lots into areas for artistic invention and community engagement. The exhibition venues for the artists will be transparent red plexiglass containers. For this Edmonton edition the platforms will be placed in a parking lot in Edmonton’s up and coming arts district: the Quarters. The transient gallery spaces are the size of average vehicles ( 10’l 6’w 8’h ) fitting inside the lines of individual parking stalls.
The Parking Lot Platform: Estonia > Edmonton Exchange is a way to artistically engage the public and The Quarters present community during the redevelopment stages. Today the area has already undergone major development projects and architecture firms like DUB Architects have submitted proposals for temporary public activations during the upcoming building phases. Temporary Investments is highly anticipating the growth of this area. We are thrilled of the cities dreams and goals to bring affordable live work studios into the area and to develop lively public space, while preserving the residential and social infrastructure already present. The unique urban plans for the area are ones that we think may put Edmonton on the global map as a viable and affordable district for local and international artists to practice. We see Parking Lot Platform as a positive precursor to this further development and a way to have the Edmonton community begin to see the area as a venue for artistic practices, community engagement, and global exchange.
EXHIBITION THEMATIC
For this project the two pairs of collaborating artists will each be asked to create works based on these specific research questions:
How has the disposition of bodies in urban landscapes shifted due to transformation of media/ technology? And how as artists can we visually articulate specific points of contemporary cultural, architectural, personal, and biological mutations? And finally is it necessary to undergo mutation to belong?
The artists should as well consider the specific site of the platform, the placeless parking lot and how this nomadic location influences their artistic decisions. How can they understand the stranger and be the stranger simultaneously.
EXCHANGE FORMAT
Artists will be introduced online two months prior to meeting at their shared studio space in Edmonton. During this time the artists can get to know each other’s practices, conceptualize and share ideas.
Two weeks before the opening the Artists will meet in Edmonton and begin a studio residency where they will build the exhibition and experience the city together.
Artists will be encouraged to participate in an artist talk and various events once the exhibition is activated.
Budget: Temporary Investments will cover all studio costs, tools, and transportation of artwork. Each artist pair will receive a $1000 material budget. Each Edmonton artist will receive an artist fee of $1000.
