How do you learn to be a visual artist? There are many different ways to discover and grow your potential. In this webinar Lindsey Bond (a white settler, intermedia artist-mother born in amiskwacîwâskahikan -Beaver Hills House or Edmonton) and Jess Richter (a German-Anglo-Canadian contemporary folk artist and filmmaker based out of Treaty 4 Territory) will discuss the role mentorship and post secondary education played in their art careers so far….
This session is hosted and moderated by Chris W. Carson (Executive Director, CARFAC Alberta) + Wendy Nelson (Executive Director, CARFAC Saskatchewan) .
Lindsey Bond will be speaking about her experience of stepping away from academia for ten years to delve into working in the non-profit / artist-run sector. She will also speak to her decision and the process of completing her MFA in Intermedia at the University of Alberta as an Artist-Mother in her late 30’s. Mentorship in the arts and her MFA experience has served her well as a Visual Artist and she will discuss where they differ and overlap in her intermedia practice.
Jess Richter completed her MFA at the University of Regina in 2017 and was mentored by Heather Benning through CARFAC in 2019. She will speak about her experiences expanding her practice outside of the studio into site-specific work, and how her mentorship transformed her creative practice which weaves together rural experiences and German-Canadian identity through the lens of folk horror.
