This Black History Month, The AGA and CARFAC Alberta are partnering to offer a professional development talk for artists and cultural workers from the Black Community.  We are excited to have Geneviève Wallen (curator, writer, and researcher) and Toyin Oladele (multidisciplinary artist, curator and arts manager) speak on how to navigate the art world from their perspective and experiences. This professional development program is open to artists and cultural workers who are looking for advice, strategies and resources in building their career in the arts in Canada.

This online program is open to people from across Canada. Please note that this program is being hosted in Alberta which is currently Mountain Time. You can participate in this hour-long program online through watching our free livestream. At the end of this program, we will reserve time for an audience Q&A.

Registration is not required but is encouraged.

Guest Speakers

Geneviève Wallen is an award-winning independent curator, writer, researcher, and workshop facilitator. Wallen’s practice is rooted in the territories of Tiohtiá:ke/Mooniyang (Montréal) and Tkaronto (Toronto). Her curatorial and administrative work is informed by intersectional feminism, intergenerational dialogues, and BIPOC platforms offering alternatives to neo-liberal definitions of care. Her ongoing curatorial explorations include the practice of gift-giving, carving space for unfinished thoughts, and musings on the intersection of longevity and pleasure. In 2022, Wallen was awarded the Joan Yvonne Lowndes Award from the Canada Arts Council and the GOG Awards for Art Writing.

Toyin Oladele is a multi-disciplinary artist, curator, arts manager, creative strategist, and community builder, originally from Nigeria. She is a motivated and results-focused professional with almost two decades of experience in the arts. Amongst other areas of service, she is a board member, arts leader, Founder and Executive Director for the Immigrant council for Arts Innovation and a Public art consultant for the City of Calgary. She has demonstrated excellence in organizational development, strategic planning, program development and implementation, community engagement, and equity & diversity and inclusion. She uses these skills to support individuals and arts organizations across North America through mentorship and volunteer support.
