Public Art can play many roles in a community. To be successful, public art must add real meaning to the spaces occupied. In Curatorial Approaches in Public Art, Ciara McKeown explores new ways to think about and create public art.

ABOUT THE WEBINAR:

This webinar will examine curatorial commissioning processes that disrupt/alter/shift the standard approaches to public art, asking how to engage with and be responsive to context and place in meaningful ways. We will look at examples of research-based, contextually driven artistic practices and curatorial commissioning processes that are not monuments, plop art and spectacles. How might we redefine the role of public art and its meaning? What new ways of working do these practices require from the artist, public art curator and commissioner?

ABOUT THE PRESENTER

McKeown has worked as a public art consultant, curator, director, commissioner and project manager, with artists, arts organizations and government agencies across Canada and the US for almost two decades. Since 2017 she has been the Principal of CMCK Public Art, an independent consulting practice that commissions and manages public art projects, and furthers discourse in contemporary public art practice.

After the 55-60 minute presentation, there will be time for a Q+A and discussion. This webinar is hosted and moderated by Chris W. Carson: Executive Director at CARFAC Alberta
