Art and Community Standards
with Su Ying Strang Artist and cultural worker, Director of The New Gallery (TNG), Calgary, AB;
and David LaRiviere Artist and cultural worker, Director of PAVED Arts, Saskatoon, SK.
6:30 – 8:00pm MDT/CST
Emerging in the 1960’s and 70’s, artist-run centres established new methods of presenting and discussing art and culture. What is happening today, some sixty years later? Join us on April 28th as two current Artist -Run Centre Directors discuss Art and Community Standards.
“Su Ying Strang will share her thoughts on collaborative programming and partnerships, drawing from her experiences working with peer organizations and community members through her role as Director of The New Gallery. Strang will reflect on some of her own core considerations, including relevance, alignment of values, and symbiotic, supportive partnership frameworks. Additionally, artist-run ethos such as experimentation and peer mentorship are central to Strang’s approach, both while collaborating with others in the broader artist-run community, as well as beyond, supporting collaboration with other organizational models and individuals.”
“Since January of 2008, David LaRiviere has been the Artistic Director of PAVED Arts, a media arts artist-run centre located in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. His artwork has appeared in numerous solo and group exhibitions across Canada including The Slight Return, a two-person exhibition at the Truck Gallery in Calgary (with Jennifer Cherniack); “The Art Gallery,” a 2013 solo exhibition at Neutral Ground in Regina; and a three-month residency and solo exhibition project entitled #everysordiddetail at Open Space Arts Society in Victoria, BC in 2018. LaRiviere’s most recent project, an installation entitled Treaty Six: The Smooth and the Striated, was included in the borderLINE 2020 Biennial of Contemporary Art at the Art Gallery of Alberta.
Reflecting on his 13-year engagement as the Artistic Director and sometimes Curator for PAVED Arts, LaRiviere will discuss artist-run culture with regards to the distinctive features of the register, focusing on community-driven attributes that emanate from spaces created by and for artists. His interests lie in situating the artist-run as a pliable and mobile institutional model with the capacity and potential to fly under the radar, thereby resisting co-optation by the neoliberal ethos that otherwise pervades our media environment. ”
RSVP on Eventbrite by 5pm on April 28, phy covering such topics as art, politics, life death and general BS.
